- known informally as the bac, is an examination sat in the final year of the lycée (la terminale), so usually at age 17 or 18. Students sit exams in a fairly broad range of subjects in a particular category: the bac S places the emphasis on the sciences, for example, whilst the bac L has a literary bias. Some categories cater for students specializing in more directly job-based subjects such as agriculture.
