La colonia dei Padri Pellegrini fu decimata dalle malattie e dalla fame nel corso del primo inverno trascorso nel Nuovo Mondo. Ma nell'autunno 1621 il raccolto fu buono e permise loro di sopravvivere; decisero così di rendere grazie e festeggiare, organizzando un banchetto al quale invitarono anche gli Indiani, che avevano insegnato loro a cacciare e a coltivare il mais. Oggi il giorno del Ringraziamento si celebra in tutti gli Stati Uniti il quarto giovedì di novembre. È, insieme al Natale, la festa più importante dell'anno, un'occasione per riunire tutta la famiglia. Momento centrale è il tradizionale pranzo a base di tacchino ripieno con patate dolci e salsa di mirtilli rossi (cranberry sauce) e torta di zucca, come dessert. Questa stessa festa viene celebrata in Canada il secondo lunedì d'ottobre.
