Der Nerv hat auf Höhe des Halses einen Durchmesser von ca. 2 – 3 mm und verläuft zusammen mit der Arteria carotis und der Vena jugularis interna genau vor dem Atlas.
Wenn die Funktionalität des Nervus vagus beeinträchtigt ist ( kann auch durch cervikale Arthrose entstehen ), können eine ganze Reihe von Symptomen auftreten wie Übelkeit, Magenübersäuerung, Schwindel, Gesichtsrötung, Tachykardie, Nackensteifheit und Kopfschmerzen.
