Musikalisch ist der Abend auf der in Essen mittlerweile gewohnten Qualitätshöhe, obwohl diesmal nicht Stefan Soltesz, sondern Patrik Ringborg am Dirigentenpult steht.
Die oft zu Herzen gehende Musik Gounods gewinnt unter seiner Stabführung lyrischen Atem; kraftvolle Akzente fehlen nicht.
