Die meisten Knochenfische (mit Ausnahme der Thunfische) sowie die Mehrzahl der Haie sind ektotherm.
Das bedeutet, dass diese Tiere ihre Körpertemperatur nicht selber, durch ihren Stoffwechsel regulieren können, sondern dass die Körpertemperatur von der sie umgebenden Wassertemperatur abhängt.
