The goal of the expedition, which started on July 8th, 1881 under the leadership of Adolphus Greely, was the establishment of a permanent Polar station in Lady Franklin Bay on Ellesmere Island.
Numerous scientific observations on magnetism, climate and the tides were planned.

Weitere Messungen werden an der polnischen Polarstation im Hornsund auf Spitzbergen, an der finnischen Station in Pallas Sodankylae ( Finnland ) sowie in Point Barrow, Alaska ( USA ) durchgeführt.
Außerdem werden die Daten zur Ergänzung der NASA- und ENVISAT- Satellitenprojekte herangezogen.
www.awi.deNetwork of ground level measurements and satellite observations In order to be able to assess the complexity of Arctic haze, measurements similar to the flight recordings in Ny-Ålesund on Spitsbergen ( home base of the German-French Arctic station, the Japanese station and the Norwegian-Swedish mountain station ) will be made at ground level.
Additional measurements will be conducted at the Polish polar station in Hornsund on Spitsbergen, at the Finnish station in Pallas Sodankylae ( Finland ), as well as in Point Barrow, Alaska ( USA ).
Furthermore, the data will be used to complement NASA and ENVISAT satellite projects.
