Massive Proteste gegen Abriss und Wohnungsnot mündeten 1977 in den Wettbewerb „ Strategien für Kreuzberg “ und ab 1979 in die illegale „ Instand ( be ) setzung “ zahlreicher leerstehender Häuser im Stadtteil – Ausgangspunkte für die IBA-Altbau.
Zu ihren wesentlichen Anliegen zählt die Erhaltung, Stabilisierung und Weiterentwicklung der vorhandenen sozialen und funktionalen Strukturen der Stadt und die Durchsetzung von Prozessen wie Selbsthilfe- und Mietermodernisierung.
