www.giz.deWhen the public system of waste collection and disposal in the war-torn city broke down completely in 2006, more than 40 youth organisations working in the waste disposal sector in Freetown joined forces to form a waste management association called Klin Salone ( which means ‘ Clean Sierra Leone ’ in the local language, Krio ).
With GIZ’s support, they negotiated a service delivery contract with the relevant authorities, enabling them to take on the task of transporting the waste and running 31 collection points and two disposal sites.
This created permanent jobs for 520 young people, who are now working for a municipal company.
