Paul Langerhans ( 1847 – 1888 ) – der Kopf im Logo des Deutschen Zentrums für Diabetesforschung – ist der Entdecker ( 1869 ) der später nach ihm benannten Langerhans-Inseln in der Bauchspeicheldrüse.
Diese Zellansammlungen werden auch Langerhanssche Inseln oder Inselzellen genannt und in ihrer Gesamtheit oft als Inselorgan bezeichnet.
Da sie u.a. Insulin produzieren und ausschütten, sind sie für die Diabetesforschung von großer Bedeutung.

These cell clusters, which were later named after him, are often referred to as islet cells or – in their entirety – as the islet organ.
