Seine Hauptinteressen liegen im Bereich der Schnittstellen von algebraischer Geometrie und Topologie und er ist der Mitbegründer der Homotopietheorie von Schemata.
In den letzten Jahren hat er diese Theorie in der Homotopie Typentheorie (HoTT) angewandt, welche zurzeit in der mathematischen Logik und Informatik sehr intensiv diskutiert wird.
2002 erhielt er für seine moderne Formulierung von motivischer Kohomologie und für deren Verwendung im Beweis der Milnor-Vermutung die Fields Medaille.
