Das komplexe Tonsystem des Vietnamesischen wird nicht nur durch die Tonhöhe ( F0 ) und das Tonregister, sondern auch durch die Stimmqualität charakterisiert.
Es besteht aus sechs Konturtönen, zwei Tonregistern sowie der Interaktion zwischen Ton und laryngalen Merkmalen (Glottalisierung, Knarrstimme (creaky voice) und Behauchung (breathiness)).
Im Rahmen einer Doktorarbeit werden folgende Fragen behandelt:
