PTB has been using the synchrotron radiation of the BESSY I storage ring in Berlin-Wilmersdorf for radiometry purposes for 15 years already.
Detectors, radiation sources and optical components for industry and research are characterized and calibrated in the BESSY I radiometry laboratory which has developed into a European radiometry center used by institutions from all over the world.
Focal points in the past years were, among other things, work concerning the Sun s physics and X-ray astronomy in cooperation with the ESA and NASA Space Agencies.

Schwerpunkte der letzten Jahre waren unter anderem Arbeiten zur Sonnenphysik und Röntgenastronomie in Kooperation mit den Raumfahrtagenturen ESA und NASA.

www.ptb.deDue to the optical arrangement required for focussing and for a spectral filtering of the broadband synchrotron radiation, this can, however, not be achieved with sufficient accuracy.
This problem has now been solved by tracing the calibration of single-photon detectors back to a primary detector standard, a cryogenic electric substitution radiometer ( cryogenic radiometer ) – the most accurate primary standard available in radiometry.
Hereby, the MLS was used as a scalable radiation source in which the number of stored electrons can be varied from 1 to 1011 and, thus, the radiation power can be correspondingly adjusted.
www.ptb.deWegen des dazu nötigen optischen Aufbaus für eine Fokussierung und eine spektrale Filterung der breitbandigen Synchrotronstrahlung gelingt dies jedoch nur mit unzureichender Genauigkeit.
Jetzt wurde das Problem gelöst, indem die Kalibrierung von Einzelphotonendetektoren auf ein primäres Detektornormal rückgeführt wurde: auf ein kryogenes elektrisches Substitutionsradiometer ( Kryoradiometer ), das genaueste in der Radiometrie verfügbare Primärnormal.
Die MLS diente dabei als skalierbare Strahlungsquelle, bei der sich die Anzahl der gespeicherten Elektronen von 1 bis 1011 variieren und damit die Strahlungsleistung entsprechend einstellen lässt.
