In recent years carnitine has gained importance, especially as a food supplement for humans and animals not only for the treatment of disease but also mainly to achieve a performance-enhancing effect.
The aim of the investigation was to describe differences in the endogeneous carnitine concentration in blood plasma and lymphocytes of sows without any additional supply of carnitine and to evaluate their influence on reproduction performance.

A significant influence of endogeneous acylcarnitine in the blood plasma could only be shown on the number of lost piglets and on litter weaning weight gain during a 28-day suckling period.
An increase by 1mmol in acylcarnitine in the plasma caused a reduction in the number of lost piglets by 2.1 % and an increase in litter weaning weight gain by 4.3kg during a 28-day suckling period.
tpg.schattauer.deDie Zahl der gesamt geborenen Ferkel pro Wurf war sowohl mit dem Gehalt des gesamten Carnitins ( r = 0,47 ) als auch mit dem freien Carnitin im Plasma ( r = 0,45 ) positiv korreliert, während für die lebend geborenen Ferkel pro Wurf nur eine Beziehung zum Gesamtcarnitingehalt ( r = 0,44 ) statistisch abgesichert werden konnte.
Ein signifikanter Einfluss auf die Saugferkelverluste und auf die Wurfzunahme in einer vierwöchigen Säugezeit ließ sich jedoch nur für das endogene Acylcarnitin im Blutplasma nachweisen.
Hierbei bewirkte eine Veränderung des Acylcarnitingehalts um 1mmol eine Reduktion der Saugferkelverluste um 2,1 % und eine Erhöhung der Wurfzunahme in einer vierwöchigen Säugezeit um 4,3kg. Schlussfolgerung und klinische Relevanz:
