As a collage that brought together recognisable elements from the worlds of consumerism, advertising, comics, science, technology and eroticism, he already staked out much of the imagery that was to go to make Pop Art.
In addition Hamilton drew up a list of keywords - such as popular, mass produced, consumable, cheap, funny, sexy, playful, striking, seductive - which he regarded as characteristic of the everyday world and that hit the spirit of the times.
These qualities were of great interest to him not only as artistic objects of investigation, but also as yardsticks for his own artistic production.
