A recent debate on the relationship between formal and informal apprenticeship in India ( Smith, 2012 ) revived the debate on the dilemma between reform and formalisation :
would it be better to improve gradually the existing informal apprenticeship or to transform it as soon as possible into a formal training scheme ?
The best conclusion on this debate would seem to be the position prepared by the ILO at the G20 in 2012:
