www.swissuniversities.chIn the second half of the 15th century, the peasant municipal organizations ( the Sieben Zenden or seven-tenths ), in the Upper Valais, conquered the Lower Valais ( which by now belonged to Savoy ), and continued to administer it until 1798.
In the 16th century, the Valais enforced its independence from episcopal rule.
In 1802 Napoleon I declared the territory an independent republic, and made it the French Département of Simplon in 1810.

The Lötschental is most certainly one of the most beautiful Valais valleys and nestles between the Bernese and Valais Alps in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Jungfrau-Aletsch.
The valley is around 30 km long and is therefore the largest of the Valais side valleys north of the Rhone.

Das Lötschental gehört sicher zu den schönsten Walliser Tälern und liegt eingebettet zwischen den Berner und Walliser Alpen im UNESCO - Welterbe Jungfrau-Aletsch Gebiet.
Das Tal ist in etwa 30 km lang und ist somit das grösste der nördlich der Rhone abzweigenden Walliser Seitentälern.
