Internal dosimetry relies on a variety of physiological or imaging techniques, whilst external dosimetry is based on measurements with a dosimeter or inferred from other radiological protection instruments.
Without the dosimeter, the radiographer may be unaware of an overexposure, or even a radiation burn, which may take weeks to result in noticeable injury.
