When inflammation has caused the joint-ends of the bones to be fused together the ankylosis is termed "osseous" or complete and is an instance of synostosis.
While the efficacy of this treatment is debated, it is almost always performed ancillary to any osseous resective or regenerative periodontal procedures.
Symptoms present as bony ankylosis, in which osseous tissue fuses two bones together reducing mobility, which is why fibrous ankylosis is also known as false ankylosis.
