This race dates back to the 13th century and is run twice a year, on July 2 and August 16 in the Piazza del Campo in Siena. Ten of the city's seventeen contrade (districts) take part; the winner is the first horse to pass the winning post, whether it still has a rider or not. Before the race there is a procession with members of the various districts dressed in historical costumes.
