- In Italy travel on superhighways is paid for by a system of pedaggio (tolls), which ensures that the user pays for the use that he or she makes of the superhighway infrastructure. The network of tolled superhighways totals about 5, 500 km and is run by 24 concessionaire companies. Tolls are normally paid in cash at the tollgate. However payment can also be made using the Viacard® system, a magnetic card that can be used either at automatic barriers or handed to the tollgate operator; or with Telepass® , a telematic system that works by means of a small machine placed on the windshield allowing the driver to pass through the appropriate lanes without stopping.
